What do you get, when you take a successful movie franchise such as X-Men, and you add a new director, and new writers? Unfortunately what you get is X-Men: The Last Stand, a failed sequel to the first two movies that does everything it can to ruin the entire trilogy. The only thing that The Last Stand offers is decent special effects, but even still, falls short in that category as well. Director Brett Ratner’s attempt to complete the final installment of the X-Men series fails in just about every way you can.
When I had first heard that Bryan Singer would not be doing the third movies, I was a little disappointed, but then though, that he did such a great job on the first two movies, and left enough behind, that no one would be able to screw it up. Well, was I ever wrong. There was a certain theme established with the first two films, and that theme was completely ignored in an attempt for Brett Ratner to make this movie his own. It is always good for a director to make a movie his own, however, when you are making a film that already has many of its parts in place, then you risk ruining what has already been established. In The Last Stand, the characters act completely different that they did in the first two movies. From Professor X snapping at Wolverine, to Magneto calling the lesser mutants Pawns. This is not how they acted before, and there was no reason for them to do so now. It also appeared that Brett Ratner has no idea how to tie emotions into lighting and music. As many as 6 main characters either die, or lose their mutant powers, yet you will find that you don’t really seemed bothered by this the way you did when Jean apparently died in the second film. Overall, this was just not a good movie, and unfortunately for many, will ruin the entire series.
