Member's Critiques and Reviews of this movie:

The Covenant tells the story of 4 boys who belong to a supernatural legacy have been given the power to do anything they want. The only catch is that the more you use your powers, the quicker your body ages and breaks down. While the story is about all the boys, the movie itself focuses mainly on Caleb Danvers (Steven Strait). He is the first of the boys who will reach the age of 18, where his full powers will be bestowed upon him.

While the story itself has a lot of promise, and the special effects were fantastic, the movie as a whole leaves a lot to be desired. Don’t get me wrong. I liked this film. I just wanted much more out of it. These boys have the power to do anything they want, yet in the main fighting scenes there was no variation. They used what seemed like energy rays, or balls to throw at the ones they are fighting. It was a very cool effect, but it just seemed like it was overdone. Why not throw some fire into it, or some lightning bolts, or even drop the barn on the person you’re fighting. It just seemed like such a great opportunity to display the kind of power that these kids have, and they didn’t take advantage of it. Instead, they used funny moments like lifting a girls skirt up, or throwing kegs of beer at each other to display just how powerful, and at times immature these kids could be.

I would have also liked it if there would have been more information given into the background of the story and where these boys came from. They touched on it a bit, but really just leave you wanting more. There was all this talk of the covenant, the book of damnation, and a Witch hunt in the 1600’s but they really didn’t take the time to explain it all.

Overall, this was a film that had a lot of potential, but just never lived up to what it could be. I enjoyed most of it, but just felt like I was not given enough. More background on the characters, and more visual effects displaying how powerful these kids actually are, would have made this a much better film.
