Description:
In the past, George Reeves had a long, successful career from the late '30s, starting with Gone With the Wind and ending with The Adventures of Superman. Despite his fame, he is discontent with being typecast as Superman and cannot find anymore roles. Reeves is also having drinking problems and has engaged in an affair with Toni Mannix, the luscious wife of television mogul Eddie Mannix. He has sunk to the point of doing wrestling matches in his Superman costume, a point from which he can go no lower.
Following June 19, 1959, Reeves has been declared dead after a suicidal gunshot to the head. Although the police officially closed the case, his mother Loni Reeves demands justice, or at least answers. Her resolve is to have a private investigator look into the supposed "suicide." Dectective Louis Simo is assigned to investigate Reeves' strange death, interested only because his young son Evan looked up to Reeves as Superman. While delving further into the case, he makes even stranger discoveries about the actor's private life, as well as startling connections to his own life. In the process, he is stalked, beaten, and at one point, burned, but the affair Reeves had with Mannix's wife may hold a key to the truth...

Hollywoodland is a fantastic film that explores the mysteries surrounding the 1959 death of Actor George Reeves. Famous for his role as Superman, Reeves died in his home on June 16th, 1959 from a gunshot wound to his head. Originally ruled a suicide, many, to this day believe that it was murder.
The film revolves around a private detective, Louis Simo (Adrien Brody) who was hired by the mother of George Reeves to further investigate this case that had since been closed by the local police. The film does a great job of showing 3 different theories from suicide, being killed by a studio executive, to being killed by his late fiancé. Through many twists and turns, you see each possibility and the evidence that is there to support it.
The biggest surprise for me in Hollywoodland was the acting. It was some of the very best that I have seen in a long time. There has been some buzz for Ben Affleck and an academy award nomination, and I would have to agree with that. He was absolutely fantastic as George Reeves. His best work yet.
The film is also the feature directorial debut for Allen Coulter. He did a wonderful job. He does a good job mixing the different theories together to keep the audience guessing the whole time. So far this is my favorite film of 2006.
