Man of the Year is a comedy that tells the story of Tom Dobbs (Robin Williams) who is a late-night political talk show host who decides to make a run for President of the United States, even though he never expects to win. On the night of the election he is sting in a hospital room with his best friend and manager Jack Menken (Christopher Walken). They both talk about how they know he won’t win the election, but that he made some noise and made people think. As the election results keep coming in, they witness that Tom Dobbs continues to win all of the states where his name appeared on the ballots. And they begin to realize that he really does have a shot at winning.
Meanwhile at Delacroy (a company that designed the new voting machines used in the presidential election) Eleanor Green (Laura Linney) is starting to make some noise with the CEO of the company over testing that she had done. There is a flaw in the voting machines. The company decides to cover up the flaw as they don’t want to see their stock fall. The next day, after Tom Dobbs wins the Presidential election, Eleanor is fired from Delacroy for trying to make to much about the voting machine flaw. Not realizing that he won only because of a faulty machine, Tom Dobbs goes about his business as the Elected President, until he crosses the path of Eleanor. She must now try to convince him of the truth, while avoiding her former employers at Delacroy who are now trying to silence her. Tom must decide if he believes Eleanor and at what lengths he will go to set things right for the American people.
Man of the year is a very funny movie. It was not quite the comedy that I had anticipated, and at times had a very serious tone to it. Robin Williams is fantastic as Tom Dobbs, A presidential candidate tired of party politics. He runs for president on a ticket of truth and dignity, and he never holds back. When asked if he smoked marijuana as a teenager he comes back with a very truthful and simple answer “Yep, and I inhaled”. He refuses to play any games with the voters. Man of the Year is a whirl wind ride, filled with corruption, greed, and conspiracies, and a great deal of comedy.
